Widely considered one of the greatest video games of all time, Halo: Combat Evolved was the launch game for the Xbox console in 2001. The game that introduced the Halo series to the world, it also brought first-player shooters into the modern age - revolutionizing the gaming industry almost overnight. Arguably the flagship franchise for the console, Halo has cemented its legacy as a bonafide video game legend. Originally envisioned as a trilogy, the franchise has gone on to release numerous games, several tie-in novels, and even has a live-action series in the works.

 

While there have been over sixty million copies of Halo: Combat Evolved sold worldwide, very few “Not for Resale” copies exist in good condition. In fact, sealed “Not for Resale” copies in good condition are so rare that it has been several years since another sealed copy has been available on the secondary market. Released as promotional copies to select stores, and available for purchase prior to the Xbox release for Microsoft and Bungie employees, these “Not for Resale” copies were never released to the public. This particular copy is currently the highest graded “Not for Resale” copy in circulation.

Halo is one of the most influential console video games of all time and is regularly found on lists ranking the greatest video games ever. If the collectible video game market continues to expand, demand for vintage grails like Halo could increase. This copy of the game is graded a 9.8 with an A+ seal, the highest graded copy of the game to date according to Wata. Additionally, this specific version of Halo was for Microsoft employees only and never available to the public, adding to its scarcity.
Cultural Significance
First released with the original Xbox, Halo quickly became a pop-culture phenomenon that revolutionized the integration of first-person-shooters into console systems. Following its initial release, Halo received multiple Game of the Year awards and in 2017 was inducted into the Video Game Hall of Fame. To date, Halo and its sequels have sold over 70 million copies, with over 6 billion hours of gameplay logged on Xbox Live.
Recent Sales
There have been no public sales of the 9.8 other than the sale to purchase this copy. Most recently a 9.6 B+ version sold for $9,600 in May 2020. A 9.4 A+ version sold for $8,700 in October 2019. We typically see a 2x+ increase between 9.6 and 9.8 graded games.
Risk
There is very little sales data for this game in this grade. Additionally, the collectible video game category has grown significantly in the past year, and there is a possibility that such growth isn’t replicable going forward.
