Pokémon is one of the most popular media franchises of our time. Through their video games, merchandise & television series, they have amassed a multi-billion dollar business with millions of fans around the world. As of March 2021, they have sold more than 380 million games worldwide on handheld & home consoles. This makes Pokémon one of the most successful video game franchises of all time–and the franchise continues to grow with innovative, new games like Pokémon Go.

Pokémon Yellow was one of the first games from the Pokémon series, kickstarting a multibillion-dollar franchise. Unlike Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Yellow incorporated elements from the popular cartoon show. At a Wata 9.8 grade with an A+ seal, this specific game is the highest known grade in circulation.

Thesis
Pokémon Yellow was one of the first games from the Pokémon series, kickstarting a multibillion dollar franchise. This game’s condition – sealed in box at a 9.8 Grade – compounds value and scarcity given it was initially released in 1998. As of the time of the drop, our game is the only Pokemon Yellow game that Wata graded a 9.8, making it a 1-of-1.
Recent Sales
The most recent comparable sale for this Pokémon Yellow is the sale of the Pokémon Red in the same grade (9.8), as these games were released around the same time and hold the same cultural significance. Pokemon Red in a 9.8 also sold at the same auction in November 2020, and fetched $84,000.
The Culture
Pokémon defined the childhood of the Millennial Generation. It is the highest-grossing media franchise of all time with a total of $90B in revenue. The original video game series is the second best selling video game franchise (behind Mario) with more than 368M copies sold and 1B Mobile downloads. With new-age iterations of the game, Pokémon continues to attract new fans thereby cementing its iconic status in culture.
Macro Trends
The collectible video game market gained traction in 2020, breaking a record high public sale in November 2020 of $156,000 for Super Mario Bros. Given the scarcity of high quality vintage games and the amount of people engaged with the category, we are excited about the market's future potential.
Risk
This category has grown significantly this past year, and there is a possibility that such growth isn’t replicable going forward. This game sets the market for a Pokemon Yellow video game at an auction, and there aren’t a lot of data points to leverage. Additionally, it is possible that other 9.8s emerge as more people submit their games for grading.
