Often lauded as one of the greatest games ever made, Super Mario Bros. 3, the first “legitimate” sequel to the original Super Mario Bros., is revered for its feel and immersive gameplay. Developed by a team of 11 over the course of several years, its design and production was overseen and directed by video game legend Shigeru Miyamoto (known for his work on earlier Mario and Zelda titles). Previewed to audiences in the 1989 film The Wizard, Super Mario Bros. 3 was released in 1990 and became an instant success.

Introducing many mechanics that would go on to become Mario staples, like climbing vines, sliding down slopes, Koopalings and world map level management, the legacy of this game can be felt to this day. Developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), it is the third-best selling NES game, with more than 17 million copies sold worldwide. A bonafide video game classic, Super Mario Bros. 3 is as collectible as it is nostalgic.

This particular copy features a Wata 9.6 with an A seal. There was an earlier production run and a later production run of this game. The former is referred to as “Left Bros.” since the word “Bros.” is to Mario’s left. Our game is the “Right Bros.” version, which features the word “Bros.” to Mario’s right.

Recent Sales
The most recent comparable sale of Super Mario Bros. 3 in a 9.6 grade was for $21,600 in September 2020 at Heritage Auctions. This sale was for a 9.6 with A+ seal vs. our 9.6 A seal - a close comparable but not exact.
Drop Value
Otis acquired the game at auction for $10,200 and is dropping it at $5,000— representing a 104% discount to market value. We believe the game’s market and value will continue to grow especially as pricing records continue to break in this category. Just this past July, the most expensive video game ever was sold for a record $114,000 in July. But of course, past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
Best Selling Game
Super Mario Bros. 3 is the third best selling Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES, video game of all time at over 17 million copies sold worldwide.
9.6 Grade

Cultural Significance
The characters in the Super Mario Bros. franchise are embedded in pop culture. The game was created over 30 years ago, and continues to sell in the latest video game formats even today, such as the Nintendo Switch.
