Roundup: DAO may sell off BAYCs, KAWS show on Fortnite, and Trump coins

Valuation issues may force a DAO to sell off its BAYC collection

• ApeDAO, a crypto collective that has acquired 81 Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs, may be forced to sell all of its assets. The DAO recently announced a proposal to liquidate its assets and pay out the revenue to its members.

• The DAO’s $APED tokens based its value on the price of its BAYC collection. But as the price of Apes rose, the token didn’t keep up. Now there’s a huge gap between what the DAO’s token is currently worth and the value of its holdings.

Fun Fact: The proposal is almost definitely moving forward, but it’s unclear how much of a return token holders will see. The DAO is confident that the liquidation will generate “substantial returns,” but nobody knows exactly how much it’ll make off the sale.

KAWS’s London show gets panned by critics, but gamers on Fortnite love it

• KAWS opened New Fiction, his first major solo show in London, this month at the iconic Serpentine Galleries. The show also opened on Fortnite for those who couldn’t make it to the UK.

• The unique use of tech didn’t impress British critics — reviews of the show were uniformly bad. But on Fortnite, gamers loved it, with younger Fortnite visitors saying the show got them into art.

Fun Fact: KAWS got his start as a street artist in the 1990s and his work is now worth millions. In 2019 his The KAWS Album, 2005, sold for $14.7m.

The bizarre world of Trump collectible coins

• The right-wing internet is awash in ads for gold-plated novelty coins featuring the face of former President Donald Trump. While Trump loves to sell memorabilia, these coins aren’t connected to him — in fact, they’re totally anonymous.

• The coins are hawked on fake celebrity accounts and in ads next to misinformation. Affiliate marketers often claim that the coins are a kind of cryptocurrency (they aren’t, obviously).

Fun Fact: The New York Times tracked the coins and found out that they were made by a Romanian marketing firm known for misleading marketing tactics. And the coins? They’re painted gold, not gold-plated — in other words, they’re worth nothing.

• Alternative assets research platform, Vincent, analyzed the January Video Games Signature Auction at Heritage Auctions, featuring a number of Otis assets (Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, Nintendo World Championships, Super Mario Bros. 3). • A copy of Halo: Combat Evolved (Wata 9.8, A Seal, NFR variant) recently sold for $108k at Heritage Auctions on Jan. 28. An NFR copy of Halo: Combat Evolved with an A seal rating is currently open for investment at a drop value of $88.4k.

• A copy of NBA Jam (Wata 9.8 A++ Sealed, Sega Genesis) sold for $38.4k at Heritage Auctions on Jan. 28. Otis recently dropped a copy of NBA Jam with the same grade for $32.8k, which will open for trading soon.

• Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady is officially retiring after a 22-year career. A few days earlier, an autographed Tom Brady rookie card sold for $1.23m at Lelands. Otis has a Tom Brady Rookie Card (2000 SP Authentic #118 /1250 PSA 10) trading on the platform.

• Luxury fashion brand Hermés is finally making a version of its iconic Birkin bag for men.  The 2011 Hermès Birkin 35 So Black is currently trading on Otis.
